Cruise Ships- What are they doing to help?

Cruise Ships- What are they doing to help?

By: Samuel Desai

Did you know cruises are one of the most cost-effective ways to see the world? But, according to environmental consultant Pat Maher,"Cruises are probably the least environmentally friendly form of transportation going."

Cruises dump untreated sewage into the ocean, which increases the grow of algae, decreasing the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, which is needed for many animals to survive chain. Also, they spew sulfur dioxide into the air.  The EPA has set numerous standards for polluting it. Sulfur dioxide has also been linked to a negative effect on respiratory system (asthma). Studies have shown a link between short-term exposure to sulfur dioxide and visits to the emergency room. To read more on this go here.

Here are some partnerships between cruise lines and environmental funds.

1. Royal Caribbean and WWF (World Wildlife Fund)

Royal Caribbean promises to cut their emissions by 35% in the next 5 years. This will make an impact. In 2014, Royal Caribbean generated 4.9 million tons of co2. Also, Royal Caribbean has 90% of their seafood declared suitable by the Marine Stewardship Council and other organizations.

2. Un-Cruise adventures and The Monterrey Bay
This small cruise line teamed up with this aquarium to provide sustainably sourced fish to its customers, which is not as strict as Royal Caribbean.

3.Carnival and The Nature Conservancy
The world's largest cruise line donated $2.5 million to the Nature Conservancy to help with projects.

Peace Boat

This environmental cruise line has designed a cruise ship (Eco-ship) which promotes the environment. This ship includes a rooftop, a non-toxic hull which imitates  dolphin skin, and retractable sails which double as PV cells.
