Climate Change

The world is getting worse, I can't deny it. Humans are polluting the air, water, night sky, and our ears. It will only get worse. As humans pollute the air with more and more carbon dioxide, greenhouse gasses force the solar radiation in, heating up the earth more, and more.
The Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is a pretty simple effect which helps keep our planet warm. I once read somewhere that without the greenhouse effect, the average temperature on Earth would be about 0 degrees (the average temperature is about 61 degrees)
Greenhouse gasses cause the earth temperature to increase. According to a recent study, 670 million people are at risk to sea level rise by the end of the century (worldwatch.org). Not only that, but climate change will cause a rise in temperature. A rise in temperature could lead to heat stroke and dehydration.
Climate Change and Animals
Climate change isn't just affecting us, it also affects pretty much every species of animal. Every animal requires:
- The right temperatures
- Climate change is melting ice caps in the arctic, reducing the polar bear hunting grounds.
- Warmer water temperatures will cause massive coral bleaching(which has already started to happen) and a decline in fish population.
- Freshwater
- Larger floods will decrease water quality for animals to live in.
- Food sources
- Climate change has altered food availability for species which migrate, such as the tundra swan (that will be a later post). Migratory birds may arrive at their destination finding that their food source already had it´s peak, or finding that it isn´t available yet.
- Places to raise their young
- Many birds raise their young in the arctic. According to the Audubon Society, arctic birds will lose much of their nesting grounds.
What can we do to help?
To me, climate change is a very vague issue, there are many things to do to combat it, from installing renewable energy to planting trees. If you want a great site to find out how to reduce your carbon footprint, I suggest this one.
Minor Roadblocks
Many people deny climate change in public, because their businusses would have to take steps to help the environment, which is expensive. Even our president-elect denies it (but I believe he actually knows, he just won't admit it). 97% of scientists beleive climate change is real.In fact, Suprisingly, the oil company Exxon Mobil has admitted that climate change is real. Sure, they admit it and used to run a commercial on it, but they haven´t reworked their entire bussiness (towards renewable energy instead of oil) yet.
Please let me know if you have any questions on this issue, we will highlight some questions in a post and answer them in the future. I will respond to all of them, so write as many as you want.
The carbon dioxide warming rate has never been this big 😢 |
